For years I experienced an inner angst whenever I was intentional in talking about God. Often I found my ability to initiate such conversations limited. Though I had learned all the "right" questions to begin the conversation, many of the questions seemed, at least to me, artificial and/or contrived.
Almost four years ago now, however, I came to the realization that there were at least two, fundamentally important questions in life--two questions that everyone must deal with in one way or another. Those questions?
- Is there a God?
- And, if so, Is He able to be known (e.g.-can one have contact and communication with Him)?
Given the fact that I very much enjoy the opportunity of interacting with students in particular, I began asking these two questions of young men and women at virtually every opportunity I had. Much to my surprise (and delight!), I discovered that, not only did they resonate with the questions, but many demonstrated a sincere interest in discussing them further. Moreover, the honesty of the responses they gave compelled me to keep asking.
And...for the past four years, I have done just that! The conversations I experienced, as well as the strong evidences for God's existence, that Jesus is His Son, and that the Bible is a reliable record of His revelation, serve as the "backdrop" for the book Engage!
In each and every conversation, I do my best to convey accurately not only the evidences that support the Christian faith but also seek to communicate clearly the love of Jesus Christ. As does everything of value, being able to communicate why one should be confident in the truth claims made in the Bible and by Jesus requires an investment of time, energy and, above all, prayer. These, I am convinced, cannot be substituted. A deep and abiding faith requires deep thinking and an abiding relationship with Christ.
So...if you are willing to be a pilgrim with me on this path, I would love to have you join me. As I write and reflect, and reflect as I write, your comments and questions are appreciated. My desire in this blog is simply to convey some of the experiences I have (as well as the lessons I learn) along the path of engaging others in conversations about God.
